Mastodon – A social media site that is strangely therapeutic

It’s cold in Toronto and I’m taking the weekend from developing ideas for my seminar on journaling. Today, it’s Mastodon.

What’s Mastodon?

It’s not just another social media site that steals your input, for one thing. You’re safe to share your stories, reflections, points of view, etc. I’ve found that many of Mastodon’s users are seniors like me. That’s probably because younger people want to get noticed on the other two or three major text sites. At Mastodon, no one cares how many followers you have. Some people, such as George Takei have a very large following but most of us don’t. George has half a million, you can follow him here if you want: George Takei on Mastodon

I only have 330 followers but that’s fine. My small corner of the Mastodon world posts about writing, photography, TV and movies as well as stories about our daily lives. It’s a community. We post when we feel like it, because we want to but never because we have to. Many of my posts are about NHK and Japan, my main interest these days. But I also post about politics, the silliness of Western religions as well as little stories about ‘The Life of Brian’. Here’s a link to my profile on Mastodon:  Brian’s Mastodon profile

The limit for posts on Mastodon is 500 characters. That’s fine because it keeps things short and to the point. It trains your mind to sift out the extraneous bits in order to focus on what’s important. I can ramble on here but there, I have to be sparse with my words.

If you’re looking for some kind of virtual companionship, check out Mastodon. I can almost guarantee that you’ll feel right at home there. I really do hope to see you there.

Cheers!

(The best day of the year for me because from now on, the days get longer. Florence sings ‘Dog Days’ but I am convinced she means ‘dark days.)
